Music in my Corazon
I can't believe how much of a different taste we have in music. For the most part, Emma will listen to anything that I play which for me is the best thing ever. Now... MARIAH... this girl is on another level. Absolutely loving any type of Music that Dad listens to. I can't say I like to hear it all but most of it brings me back to my roots.
You see when I was younger, I wanted to be like my peers. I wanted to listen to the music they were listening to. I wanted to have some part of me be like them. When someone said they liked R&B Music, I wanted to know what that was. At home all we heard was MEXICAN Music... from Los Dandys and Ramon Ayala to Menudo and Selena. If it was a Spanish speaking singer, then I knew it.
I had never heard Bohemian Rhapsody (side note- I ended up knowing about this song when I was around 29) or Country music, I didn't/don't know all the classic American Music. Growing up there was a sense of urgency to look like my peers, to dress and act like my peers. In doing so, I have/had lost part of my being. I have lost touch with my MEXICAN roots. Slowly and over the years, I have been able to regain the sense of who I truly am. It does pain me to say this. I have not only lost who I am but in doing so, I think I've forgotten how to teach you girls to be WHO you are. Deep inside we have that fighting feeling to become more and to show people that not only can we be like them but we can also do and be better. We have that fighting force in our beings to want more and be more. Never, ever lose that burning fire inside of you. Listen to Corridos and Banda and Mariachis. Let yourself roll your R's and stand proud in who you are.
As a Mexican American, not only do we have to know the American genre of music but also make sure we understand and never forget LATIN MUSIC. It's a beautiful thing to be able to enjoy any kind of music and not feel bad about what you listen to. Don't be afraid to open up the wonderful music world to someone else. You never know when they may fall in love with our music.
